Match Report: Everton 2 Spurs 2 (poor result)
Match Report: Everton 2 Spurs 2 (poor result)
In the first 5 minutes, you could feel
it in your bones how this game would turn out (as all the others have, a let
down). Now Kane goes limping off, with the League Cup Final just around the
corner.
While the match was playing out on the
field, the camera's moved to Levy, who
was texting on his phone; I wonder if he was trying to contact the undertakers?
The trouble with Levy is that he is an economist/ businessman who wants to be a
football manager. He has been in charge for 20 years, and what is his legacy (apart
from a money-making stadium)? Dulux taking the piss out of his trophy cabinet. What
a way to celebrate 20 years on the field under his stewardship. Enough… let us
move on to another non-impressive game.
Harry Kane scored twice to cancel out
Gylfi Sigurdsson's two goals and earn us a point. The game didn't do either of
us any favours.
Kane, as always, was at his clinical
best, exploiting two mistakes in the Toffee munchers defence to put us ahead in
the first half and grab a second-half equaliser. In between his worthy goals, Sigurdsson
strikes to level his Toffee chewing brothers with us and then gave them the lead,
even though briefly.
Before the final whistle could be blown,
Kane walked off the pitch after landing awkwardly on his ankle.
My thoughts
I thought Everton pushed the hardest
for a winner and had the best chance to win it, but Joshua King's effort was
saved by Hugo Lloris, and Richarlison fired the rebound over from 12 yards. We
finish the game in 7th place, while the Toffee mulchers are in 8th:
one step forward, two back, which sums up our season nicely. As for the Cup Final
next week? God knows! Toss a coin and make your bet. Whatever happens, I'll be
there to witness it. Yes, I managed to get a ticket. But, because of the COVID-19,
you've got to jump through a load of hoops to see if you are worthy. But that story
is for another day.
Harry Kane
He left the field under his own steam
but did so immediately while shaking his head. As we know, Kane has suffered a
series of ankle injuries in the past, which only adds to the concern. If it
wasn't for Kane, the team would be in dire straights, and we would probably be a
lot lower in the league table. Let us hope that his leaving the field was just
a precaution.
His goals were his 20th and 21st of this
season, taking him two clear in the race for the golden boot. They also lifted
him into seventh on the all-time Premier League scorers chart, clear of Robbie
Fowler and Jermaine Defoe. The bigger question is, will he be still here to
build on that goal record or move to greener pastures? Under Levy's record, he
could be considered a fool if he stays.
There isn't really much more I can add,
other than it has been a sorry season. In fact, it has been a miserable year
for everybody. Stuck at home, no live football, no socialising, no pub, no
nothing. No wonder so many people have felt depressed. The only positive in all
this mess is that we are above the Gooners. However, they are only 5 points
behind us with a game in hand (it isn't worth thinking about).
The states
The past five meetings between Everton
and us at Goodison Park in all competitions have produced 26 goals (10 for
Everton, 16 for us), an average of 5.2 per game.
Everton have failed to win any of their
past five Premier League matches (D3 L2), their longest such run since December
2018 under Marco Silva.
No Premier League side has dropped more
points from winning positions this season than us (20).
Everton have scored all five of the
penalties they have taken against us in the Premier League (Cottee, Unsworth
x2, Ferguson, Sigurdsson).
Only versus Chelsea (6) has Everton's
Gylfi Sigurdsson scored more Premier League goals than against us (5). Indeed,
Sigurdsson is the third player to score a Premier League double against Spurs,
having played for us in the competition, after Darren Bent (April 2010,
Sunderland) and Matthew Etherington (December 2011, Stoke).
Only Alan Shearer (7) and Sergio Aguero
(6) have scored 20+ goals in more different Premier League seasons than Spurs'
Harry Kane (5 - level with Thierry Henry).
Harry Kane has been directly involved
in 62 goals in 62 appearances in all competitions for us under Jose Mourinho
(45 goals, 17 assists) - no Premier League player has more goal involvements in
this period (since 23 November 2019).
What's next?
We play Southampton on Wednesday (18:00
BST kick-off) in the Premier League before our Carabao Cup final against
Manchester City at Wembley a week on Sunday.
I am off to bed, but not with happy
thoughts… just concerns about our direction.
