Four candidates who could replace Jose Mourinho as manager

Four candidates who could replace Jose Mourinho as manager

As you all know, unless you've been hibernating, Jose Mourinho was sacked after 16 months in charge, just days before he was due to lead his side in the Carabao Cup Final against Manchester City, which we humiliatingly lost (and may not have done so if he had been left in charge, but we'll never know). Mourinho's time in charge amounted to zero trophies, countless gloomy performances, and allegedly several high profile digs at his own players. Now he has gone. Then Levy puts an inexperienced former player, Ryan Mason, temporary in charge to help us dive further down the league table. Currently, a search for a new boss is likely to happen in the coming days and weeks.

There is a bloody mess to sort out for whatever poor sod takes over.

So, who is going to put Levy's noose around their neck?

Brendan Rodgers

Brendan Rodgers, the Leicester City boss, has experience coaching a "Big Six" side already, thanks to his time in charge of Liverpool between 2012 and 2015. He's won league titles with Celtic. He's helped "smaller" Premier League sides overachieve in the past, and of course, the Foxes are on course to qualify for the Champions League this season. His teams play attractive football, and he has a record of promoting young talent. What more can Daniel Levy want?

The question is, would he be stupid enough to leave Leicester for the erratic behaviour of Levy?

He signed a new deal at Leicester City in December 2019, with his contract running until 2025. Getting him out of it would be expensive, which might scare off Levy.

To be honest, I can't see him joining us and working with a serial sacker (Levy).

Nuno Espirito Santo

The Wolves boss was a former charge of Jose Mourinho's, having been a goalkeeper in his Champions League-winning Porto squad of 2004. He has a good record with Wolves. He has proved himself a talented Premier League manager over the past three seasons. Could Levy control him?

He's never won silverware as a manager, which might go against him.

Scott Parker

Scott Parker is the only candidate on this list who represented us as a player.  He would be a popular choice on the terraces, but limited coaching experience may count against him. Fulham are the only club he has ever managed, and for me, that should rule him out. He is also about to take Fulham down to the Championship. What he has in his favour is that Levy might find it easier to manipulate him because of his inexperience.

Eddie Howe

The former Bournemouth boss looked a strong possibility for the Celtic job a few weeks ago, then interest suddenly dropped off. Howe has also been out of work since the Cherries were relegated from the Premier League at the end of 2019/20. Like Parker, I would also rule him out.

Out of the names I've mentioned, Rodgers and Nuno Espirito Santo would be better than Parker or Howe. Whoever comes in needs to stand up to Levy's iron fist control and lack of money to buy players.

I know there have been other names in the running, but let us deal with this lot first. We don't want to get too drenched in names… more can come later. I presume this could be a long old hall, even though I had said it could take days or weeks (you just never know with Levy).

Another name that has been talked about, Erik ten Hag

It has been reported that the club have received a boost in our reputed chase for Erik ten Hag. It seems that Eintracht Frankfurt have pulled out of the race for the Ajax boss. As you all know, our first choice Julian Nagelsmann has agreed to take charge of Bayern Munich at the end of the season, and Jesse Marsch is said to have turned down a chance to join Spurs in favour of a move to RB Leipzig. So, as we’ve seen two hopefuls probably scared off by Daniel Levy’s iron-fist control, we have turned to other candidates, such as Ajax coach Ten Hag, who is thought to be one of the top men on Levy’s list.

The 51-year-old is reported to want to leave Ajax but has also been linked with a move to Eintracht Frankfurt, who are on the hunt for a replacement for Borussia Monchengladbach bound Adi Hutter. It is all a bit like that comedy Soap that was on many years ago. According to German daily Bild, the Bundesliga club have now pulled out of the race for Ten Hag as they believe he is too expensive, handing Spurs a boost in their chase for the Dutchman. If they think he is too costly, that must rattle Levy’s cage.

If you believe the press – and why not – Levy has scheduled a meeting with Ten Hag.

Even though Eintracht Frankfurt have pulled out of the chase for the Ajax manager, Wolfsburg coach Oliver Glasner, who is also on Spurs’ list, remains a candidate for the German outfit.

In this merry go round of Levy’s list of managers, it will remain a circus until Levy manages to pin the tail on the donkey and get his victim. But, in the meantime, it keeps everybody amused and pens firmly clenched in fists.

As names pop up, fans will agree, disagree and probably write thousands of words in the process in this black comedy of Levy’s managerial game of Thrones.

I just hope that whoever is picked stands up to Levy and is a solid and experienced manager.

What are your thoughts?

  1. You possibly should have written that with Mourinho in charge for the League Cup Final, the scoreline could have been worse and possibly a more emphatic and humiliating defeat.

    1. That is true, however, we shall never know. Nevertheless, I do feel that Mourinho had experience over Mason.
