Transfer deadline over with, at least until January 2024
Transfer deadline over with, at least until January 2024
Our final acquisition was the signing of Brennan
Johnson from Nottingham Forest after a long week of transfer window rumours. Johnson
joins us on a contract until 2029. He will be wearing the number 22 shirt.
Normally, this is part of Daniel Levy’s MO,
waiting for the last few minutes before concluding business. And, yes, in the
case of Brennan, that was the case... but most of the other purchases had been
done earlier.
Johnson joins from Forest, where he impressed the hierarchy
in their Premier League promotion campaign.
Johnson will add a lot of pace and direct running
to a technical attacking lineup alongside Kulusevski, Richarlison, Son, and Maddison.
He is our ninth signing of the summer window. The
other deals were Pedro Porro and Dejan Kulusevski (both were on loan from last
season and then made permanent this season). Guglielmo Vicario, James Maddison,
Manor Solomon, Micky Van de Ven, Alejo Veliz, and Ashley Phillips were other
purchases in this Transfer Window.
It was an interesting and very dramatic deadline
for us. I stayed up until gone 11 at night to find out if we had sneaked in any
other players; alas, Johnson was the last. Before the final deadline, the day
was ultimately filled with maybes and almosts.
Johnson is a great signing; however, I believe it
will probably take some time before he is ready to fit into Ange’s philosophy. Then
again, Vicario, Maddison, and De Ven fitted in immediately. Probably depends on
how he does in training. Whatever… he is one that Ange wanted and believes he
is ideal for his system.
Granted, the fans and probably the manager wanted another
centre-back… such as Conor Gallagher… but it wasn’t to be. If we had a chance
of getting him, we would probably have had to shift other players from our
ranks, but that didn’t pan out.
Ange Postecoglou seems happy with what he has got;
if Tottenham is a work in process and it will probably take a season or two
before we are ready to challenge for major honours and Champions League
football, then the sky will be the limit. However, and saying that, we’ve
started better than some people expected; we drew at Brentford (2-2) in the
first game of the season, then we beat United 2-0 at home, then a trip to the
Vitality stadium were we beat Bournemouth
(2-0), and finally, we demolished Burnley at Turf Moor 5-2. A work in progress!
If so, it is a very good work in progress. We can only get better. We’ve picked
the right man to lead us to those Glory, Glory days and nights.
