Match Preview: Spurs v Brentford (again, we go into the unknown and hope for the right result)
Match Preview: Spurs v Brentford (again, we go into the unknown and hope for the right result)
On Saturday, we play our final home game of a
blustery Premier League season. My previous blog said that I thought we would beat
Villa and Brentford, and the last game of the season, away to Leeds, would be more
difficult. It turned out that our game against Villa was more difficult than I
thought… or maybe I shouldn't have been so unwise and should have known that
our results have been all over the place this season and anything was possible
in our 'Spursy' topsy-turvy Levy Twight zone world.
I got a phone call from Clive Allen, thanking me
for my support. Others in my premium group also got a phone call from Clive
with the same message. Tottenham are so worried that the last game will be in
front of an almost empty stadium. I believe there are a lot of tickets still
available. It is a pity that it wasn't Daniel Levy phoning… if he had done that,
it would be near suicide for him. No doubt the abuse would have been insurmountable.
Anyway… back to Saturday… we have to win both of
our remaining games to stand any chance of making it into the Europa League or
face a second season in the Europa Conference League in three years. That is if
we did manage to get a position in that competition. How the mighty have fallen!
But when were we ever potent under Levy & Lewis? Pre-Levy, we had trophies from
European and our domestic leagues to count… but once ENIC took over from Alan Sugar,
it was our backs up against the money grinders and the creation of the tag 'Spursy,'
total embarrassment (the Levy brand; money before Glory).
All the speculation this week has been about Mason
wanting the job… God help us! If he is appointed, then Levy will have sunk to
an all-time low (if that is possible). Yes, Mason is so keen to press his case
for the managerial role on a full-time basis, but last week's loss at Aston
Villa would surely have done his chances little good. Since taking over, he has
managed us against United (a draw), Liverpool (a loss), Palace (amazingly, a
win) and Villa, a capitulation, a total humiliation. And he wants the job permanently…
he should return to his crocheting and keep his nose out of big boys' stuff. We
want an experienced manager… not one of Father Christmases rejected elves. Yes,
a great campaigner for Tottenham… but let us be realistic… not yet – if ever –
managerial material for us. A Levy stooge, yes… but that is it!

My
prediction
I just don't know… as always, I am hoping we win,
but we have been so unpredictable this season nothing will surprise me…
however, I shall go for a 3-2 win.
We are currently 7th in the league, but level on points with Villa
and one point behind Brighton. If Brentford should win, they will be a point
behind us with one game to go. Brighton have four games left which are against Newcastle
(today), Southampton, Man City and Villa. Villa could be difficult; if City win
the league by the time they meet, then they might stand a chance. As for relegated
Southampton… yes. I am not sure about Newcastle. As that game could go either
way.
Villa's games are against Liverpool and Brighton. But
they could magically find themselves above us if we lose our next two games. All
complicated stuff… but nothing is impossible. With all that crazed jamboree going
on, there is a good chance we will get into some sort of European competition,
however, we need to buck our ideas up.
What a pity Levy never rang… I could have given
him a few tips and suggestions!!!!! An opportunity missed by both of us!
