Spence signed for Tottenham (our 6th signing)
Yes,
after a long wait, we finally signed right-back Djed Spence from Middlesbrough.
And what a long wait it was. Every dot had to be signed, checked in and out,
sideways, which probably included a trip to Uranus… Levy probably even had to
do the hokey cokey to get their man over the line. And remember, it was Levy
who took over from Fabio Paratici to get the deal completed with Middlesbrough as
they were becoming arseholes over the agreement.
The
21-year-old, an England Under-21 international, has agreed on a contract until
2027. The deal was worth £20m.
He
spent last season on loan with Nottingham Forest, helping them secure promotion
to the Premier League.
Yes,
Spence, 21, has signed a five-year deal with an initial fee of £12.5m and £7.5m
in add-ons.
His
comments on joining us, "I bring excitement, skill, speed. I just want
to excite the fans and play well," he said.
He
is Antonio Conte's sixth summer signing, following goalkeeper Fraser Forster,
defender Clement Lenglet, midfielder Yves Bissouma and forwards Ivan Perisic and
Richarlison.
Spence
joined Middlesbrough from Fulham's academy in 2018 and scored three goals in 46
games in all competitions for Forest last season. He was named in the EFL
Championship Team of the Season and the PFA Championship Team of the Year,
having won the Championship player of the month and goal of the month awards
for March.
Spence
said: "Last year was a great season, the stuff of dreams really. To
play in the Premier League is a dream come true. I am just thankful that I have
got here, and I am going to get an opportunity to play in the Premier League at
a big club like Tottenham." That's my boy!
Some
stats on the player from last season.
Djed
Spence's statistics from last season make for good reading, with the right-back
having won more duals and completed more dribbles than any other defender in
the Championship in 2021/22.
Our
fans will be excited about what he can offer from the right-wing-back role.
He
won 508 duals during his loan spell at Nottingham Forest last season, which is
the most any defender in that division has won. He has attempted more dribbles
than any defender in the Championship and completed 76.
He
had 80 touches in the opposition box, the sixth highest in the Championship.
Spence
also had won 60 fouls across the 2021/22 campaign, with only three defenders in
the division being ensnarled more often.
My
thoughts on the purchase of the player.
I
think he will add nicely to Conte's other purchases, plus compliment the likes
of Kane, Son etc., in their runs/ attacks on goal. His stats are outstanding in
ball progression, in one-on-one situations and in making runs into the box. All
of his characteristics will complement Conte's system.
I
think we will find that this player could be Conte's outstanding player as we
challenge for top honours in all competitions in 2022/23.
I do honestly think we will win something this season.
COYS!
Glenn
