Match Preview: Brentford v Spurs (where are we now?)

At Brentford Community Stadium. KO 5.30 pm

As we sat and watched Liverpool humiliate Manchester United, we thought that Chelski v Woolwich would be just a formality… after all, Chelski were third in the table, and Woolwich had lost their last four games… game set and match, or as we thought… but nothing works out as simple as that. Woolwich Gooners thrashed the Russian bears 4-2… and at Stamford Bridge. This puts the Gooners Level on points with us, but we have a better goal difference. On the bright side, it puts us only five points behind the Russian bears. Swings and roundabouts, shame and scandals… what a topsyturvy season we are all having.

Usually, you can get a pretty good indication of how the season will end when we reach April… but not this time. Yes, the title fight will be between City and the Scousers, however, the following two places are up in the air. So our next game is more important, seeing as we couldn't give ourselves an advantage when we face the Seagulls. We now have to prepare ourselves for Christian Eriksen's Brentford, and they haven't lost a game since he started in the team for them… and they've had some impressive results, including beating the Spammers 2-0 at their ground and Chelski at Stamford Bridge 4-1.

So… we prepare ourselves for a trip to Brentford. I've been to their old ground, but this will be the first time at this new one (Brentford Community Stadium).

A bit of history about their new ground:

Brentford Community Stadium is in West London, the home of both Premier League club Brentford and Premiership Rugby club London Irish. The stadium has a capacity of 17,250. Work on the new football stadium officially started on 24 March 2017. The main works began in spring 2018.

Opening; on 30 August 2020, Brentford confirmed that the stadium was complete and ready to host football matches. The first football match at the stadium took place on 1 September 2020, when Brentford drew 2–2 against Oxford United in a pre-season friendly.

London Irish played their inaugural match at the stadium on 29 November 2020, when they beat Leicester Tigers 22–9.

Location

The stadium is located on a 7.6 acres site off Lionel Road, adjacent to Kew Bridge railway station. It stands in the middle of a triangle of railway lines, predominantly used for freight.

Saturday…

I will be leaving Janette's house at 11 am on Saturday, where I will be picked up by Mel, and then we will travel to Brentford, where we will meet Terry and Stephanie for a 1pm for a meal at an Italian restaurant. Then off to the ground for a 5.30 kick-off. As I said, I've never been to this ground, so I am looking forward to it.

BRENTFORD are ending the season with a bang as their campaign continues. And they will be playing an inconsistent Spurs. We have shown magnificent displays of football, then suddenly drop down a couple of gears and lose disastrously.

The Bees started the season on fire and are ending it the same way after a terrific recent run. They have won five of their last six games, including three in a row. The pressure is off for them when they face us, but the same can't be said for us as we fight for a Champions League spot.

After a frustrating season, it looked like we had turned the corner and were on the right track after four wins on the spin against Brighton, West Ham, Newcastle and Aston Villa, with goals in abundance. But Spurs being "Spursy", we let ourselves down spectacularly.

So who knows which Spurs side will turn up to this game?

Recent head to heads

When the sides met in December, we proved to be too strong for Brentford, as we eased to a 2-0 win. You need to go back to 1948 for Brentford's last win over us. We haven't been in the same league for 72 years.

All eyes will be on Christian Eriksen, who should get a great reception from all sides of the ground. Eriksen has been the talisman for Brentford's recent revival, and he is the favourite to score against us with the bookies.

On our side, Son has been in fantastic form up until our shock weekend loss. He has scored seven goals in his last six games for club and country.

Goals

There have been plenty of goals where we are concerned, and this could easily be another goal fest. Previous to that defeat to Brighton, we had been involved in 14 goals in three games.

Brentford have scored in their last six games.

Team news

The usual suspects are still out injured: Matt Doherty, Oliver Skipp & Japhet Tanganga.

Thoughts & prediction

This weekend is an important one for us, as it is for Woolwich (who take on United at the Emirates)and Chelski take on the Spammers at Stamford Bridge. Lose, and the others get good results, then I think we will struggle to get back in the pack, however, we still got to play Woolwich at our ground.

I am going for a 3-1 win with Eriksen, Son and Kane scoring. As for our third goal…?

Prediction: 3-1

So, there you have it. What are your thoughts on this game?

COYS!

Glenn
