Match Report: Spurs 0 Wolves 2 (is there still hope?)
Match Report: Spurs 0 Wolves 2 (is there still hope?)
After our defeat against Southampton, we expected
an extra bit of effort but instead got another loss. Some saw this match as a
continuation of the Southampton game; others said we were better against Wolves…
but whatever way one looks at it, we lost.
We could have gone above the Gooners and into
sixth place, breathing down the necks of clubs like the Spammers and United;
instead, we've slipped to 8th, now Brighton is breathing down our
necks. Granted, we've got games in hand and could, in theory, still get into
the top four, but we need to win those games… not just collection games in hand
as some sort of trophy to wave at everybody.
When I did my match preview, I predicted we would
win 2-1and ended up with egg on my face… So much for being optimistic!
The fans booed and screamed at our team, but
nothing changed… then they left in droves 15 minutes before the final whistle
was blown.
We gave Wolves two goals in the opening 20
minutes thanks to a mixture of poor defending and unfortunate goalkeeping from
our French World Cup Winner.
Their Jimenez capitalised on a soft Lloris thump
to push in the opener before giving away possession to allow Leander Dendoncker
to double their lead. The word Spursey is coming back to haunt us again. Or did
it ever go away?
This result is the first time Conte has lost
three league games in a row since November 200 (then he was managing Atlanta). This
means that Wolves climb to seventh place while we drop to 8th. They
now sit just four points behind the fourth-placed Bubble blowers.
My
thoughts
The sad thing is that Wolves have struggled for
goals this season and arrived at our stadium with only Norwich and Burnley having
scored fewer times in the Premium League. However, they do have one of the division's
best defensive records. Yet, Wolves have won four away games in a row in the
top flight for the first time since April 1980, when they finished sixth and
won the League Cup.
Was Conte to blame for poor tactical deployment?
He switched both wing-backs following the defeat by Southampton on Wednesday,
but, in the 28th minute, at 2-0 down, he withdrew Ryan Sessegnon for new signing
Dejan Kulusevski to change to a more attacking shape, but it didn't work.
Rodrigo Bentancur got his first start after
showing potential in a couple of games last week; he slid Son through on goal
in the first half only for him to delay and give their goalkeeper Sa a relaxed save.
Some say we rallied after Conte's strategic switch,
but nothing changed. Then Kulusevski was brought on to make a difference but
ended up shooting wide, and their goalkeeper made a vital stop from Cristian Romero's
header as we pressed late for that elusive goal. But no goal came.
Next up will be City at their ground, and we are
expected to get a thrashing. But it wouldn't surprise me if we pull this one
off… we can be like that… shit for a few games and then surprise everybody with
a disbelieving win. That is called Spursey… but a win at City might be just a
bit too late. Some fans I spoke to were past caring and are now focused on the
summer transfer window and what Levy can offer Conte… if he doesn't offer Conte
anything, he then will be off to something better, while we will be just like
the court jester… there for laughs!
COYS!
