Match Preview: Wolves v Spurs in the League Cup (a win or another defeat?)

WED 22 SEPT 2021EFL CUP Venue: Molineux Stadium. Time: 7.45pm

Some sobering news: we have lost every Premier League match that Steven Bergwijn has not been involved in this season. And he won't be playing tonight (Wednesday), and there is doubt over him playing on Sunday against Arsenal as well.

When Nuno Espirito Santo joined us, there was talk of a new revolution, as has been the case every time we've had a new manager; a fresh start, a new revolution… and we end up 1 step forward and 9 back. As everybody will have witnessed, we have had some momentum results in recent weeks, with us now travelling to the Wolves den in this cup match on the back of a draw and two defeats from our last three games. And when we were last at Wolves, we only narrowly won… will this be a repeat or another cup disaster for us? Dele Alli's penalty handed us all three points during our last meeting with the Wolves at Molineux a month ago.

In the second half of our match against Chelsea, we were shown who were the masters and who were the pupils, and we certainly weren't the masters… and haven't been for any time since Levy took over the purse strings of our club.

Wet behind the ears, rookie Ryan Mason led us out for last year's EFL Cup final before returning winners, Manchester City destroy our hopes and dreams of any silverware.  Apart from that game, we have failed to make it past the fourth round in four of the five previous editions before that.

Both teams -  Wolves and Tottenham - will be looking to rapidly recover from unsatisfactory league performances at the weekend, with Nuno saying they are "working to find solutions". Always the exact words, no matter who is in charge at Spurs.

Wolves

They continue to make do without injured Pedro Neto and Jonny Otto, while teenage full-back Hugo Bueno is nursing a hamstring strain.

Spurs

Japhet Tanganga returns from suspension following his sending off against Palace and will probably replace Emerson Royal at right-back. Lucas Moura and Steven Bergwijn are carrying ankle knocks and are unlikely to make the game.

Other changes should see Bryan Gil and Oliver Skipp return, while Pierluigi Gollini should be in goal as Hugo Lloris is rested after allowing in three goals.

My thoughts and prediction

My Spurs heart says we will win, but I have a terrible feeling about this game and Arsenal's on Sunday. It wouldn't surprise me if the Wolves game goes to penalties and us being humiliated again. However, with my optimistic hat on, I shall go for a win (to us).

Prediction: 0-1

As for the Arsenal game on Sunday, let us leave that for another time to worry about. However, what I can say about this weekend is that on Saturday I will be going to the boxing at the Tottenham Stadium and on Sunday a group of us are going for a meal before the Arsenal game. It is going to be one hectic weekend, whatever the result is.
