September could be a money month for Spurs (a punch up!)
Kieran Maguire
is a Football financial expert and
according to him, Levy and Co could be set for an enormous monetary windfall
when Anthony Joshua puts his World Titles on the line against Oleksandr Usyk at
the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in September.
Tottenham confirmed
a week ago that Joshua will put his IBF, WBA, WBO and IBO World Titles on the
line against Usyk at our ground on September 25.
Not only do
we have this magnificent fight, but also NFL matches to be held at our stadium,
plus concerts, and then there will be plenty more next year at our
stadium.
Maguire also
stated that Tottenham could generate substantial income from just the food and
drink sales at those events alone, as well as the hosting fee that we would
receive. Time to get that ABBA record out “Money, money, money in a rich man’s
world”.
Maguire
spoke to Football Insider and said: “This was the whole point of the
constructing the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium stadium. It was with a view of going
beyond the 25 days per year that a football club tends to exist. The stadium is
designed to extract cash from punters. Also, if you take a look at the prices
that are charged, there’s scope for profit there. I think it’s £10 a pint when
you go to watch the NFL. If you’re in a sealed environment, we’re talking
monopoly prices. So Spurs will make money because they will charge a hosting
fee. That is likely to be a flat fee, or it might be slightly tiered depending
on the number of tickets sold. But my understanding is that Spurs were making
£800,000 per match at Premier League games. For this Joshua fight, I think they
could be making far more than that. I presume that they will have a significant
proportion of the catering receipts.”
Thoughts
After the
dreadful season or so where no fans were allowed into the stadiums (and £millions
lost because of COVID), it is excellent news to see normality and money returning
to the club. Hopefully, a bit of that money will rub off and on to the team.
As for the Joshua
fight, I hope to be going. As a boxing fan, I’ve only ever seen one other
fight, but it was a great one. It was beamed live over to Hammersmith Palais
and in black and white. And you couldn’t get any bigger than Muhammad Ali
beating Leon Spinks to recapture his World Tite. A brilliant boxing match, an
excellent night/ morning out.
Stay safe, Glenn
