Will Bale be back at Tottenham?
Will Bale be back at Tottenham?
After Wales
was thrashed by Denmark in the Euros, many thought it was over for Gareth Bale.
He even walked out of an interview out of annoyance because he was asked that
precise question. But now we’ve got a bit more clarity as Bale has now said
that he plans to keep playing for Wales until he packs it in.
After the Wales
4-0 defeat on Saturday, Bale acted totally unprofessional (as the Captain of Wales)
by walking out of a post-match interview when asked about his international
future. However, with a quick about-turn, he has now clarified his position by saying
that he “loves” playing for Wales and will “play for Wales until the day that
(he) stop(s) playing football”. But, of course, this means he will need a club
to play for to keep his fitness up, whether that be Real Madrid, Spurs or
another club.
The
31-year-old is coming near to the end of his football career. However, at the
same time, he suffers from injury. That is why he has been constantly probed
about his international retirement during the European Championship. Not only
that, but there is speculation about his club future after his loan spell with
us ended last month.
Bale said, “I want to continue to play. People ask
stupid questions all the time, but obviously I love playing for Wales. I’ll
play for Wales until the day that I stop playing football. We’ve just started
the World Cup campaign, and we need to take this experience into that. I feel
like we have a very good way of playing when we play well, and we need to keep
that confidence high, keep playing football, and I think we can qualify for the
next World Cup.”
He finished
the season with us, at least at the end, strongly, but was not strong in the Euros.
He did not score at the tournament; nevertheless, he did provide two assists in
Wales’ 2-0 win over Turkey in their second group match. But he could not
prevent his side from suffering a cruel 4-0 defeat to Denmark and was booked
for dissent late in the game.
My thoughts
I can’t see Bale
coming back to Spurs now that Zinedine Zidane has left Real Madrid and Carlo
Ancelotti has taken over. Ancelotti has talked favourably about Bale, and I
think he will use him in his last season with the club. After that, he will be 33
years old and adding his injury problems to his years means he will probably retire.
No doubt Bale will be back in some exhibition match for Spurs. I saw him when
he was initially at White Hart Lane and again this season, just gone. I was
lucky to go to the lockdown games and also saw him in the League Cup Final
against Manchester City at Wembley.
All the
best, Glenn
COYS!
