The music was sweet Caroline,
and so was Kane (England 2 Germany 0)
After not scoring in the Euros
competition before the German game, you could have understood if our man Kane
was a bit down, but not one bit of it. On the contrary, after scoring England's
second goal, Kane was ecstatic, and the world opened up for him. However, this
was just the beginning for Kane, next up Ukraine. Our emotional Spurs man had
to fight back the tears as England supporters and those at home sang 'Sweet
Caroline' after beating Germany 2-0 to reach the Euro 2020 quarter-finals.
Neil Diamond's song brought emotions to
the Wembley stadium, the nation and then everybody erupted. Tears here, there
and everywhere as we went through.
First up to score was Raheem Sterling,
followed by Harry Kane in the final 15 minutes to seal it to give us a deserved
win in front of more than 40,000 noisy fans, not forgetting those watching at
home or on large screens scattered around the country.
Once the whistle went, thoughts went
to the Sweden/ Ukraine game, and once that was settled, the team knew what they
had to do. Gareth Southgate's Young Lions will now do battle with Ukraine for a
place in the semi-finals this Saturday at Rome's Stadio Olimpico.
Our Tottenham striker had been
heavily scrutinised throughout the tournament, but he was delighted to lead his team into the
next round. 'I'm speechless, I don't
know what to say,' Kane said. 'An
amazing, amazing day, amazing game. The performance was top drawer, another
clean sheet, but we go again as we ain't done nothing yet. 'We enjoy it, but we've
got another big game on Saturday and let's get ready for that.'
Some had criticised Southgate as being too 'cautious' with his
team selection, but Kane saw it differently: 'I
think it was the opposite really! We really wanted to go man-for-man, take the
game to them, press as high as we could. I think in the first 10 minutes we
were a little bit in and out, we didn't know whether to go, but we controlled
it once we got a foothold in the game. These big games are fine margins, the
first goal is so important. Raz [Sterling] again, brilliant by Raz, and it was
amazing to finish it off.'
My thoughts
I was one of them who questioned Southgate's tactics, and in the first half, I could see Germany scoring, even though that half was pretty even, but I was more confident once the second half came. Then Sterling's goal appeared, eleven minutes later, Kane popped up, as he does, and it was all over for our opposition, and now the German’s can watch the rest of the games in the comfort of their German homes.
With now Germany and France knocked out of the Euro Championship competition I feel confident that we can get to the final, and once there/ or if there, it will be in the lap of the gods! But I do feel we can win it!
While we continue
rolling along. Congratulations England… next up, Ukraine.
All the best, Glenn
