Four candles… erm, sorry, four candidates still in the frame (for manager)
Four candles… erm, sorry, four candidates still in the frame (for manager)
As the joke goes, "four candles…."
Ronnie Corbett puts four candles on the bench, "There you are, four candles"
Barker looks at him dumbly, "No, Fork handles, handles for forks". And
this is how this saga is turning out (Levy looking for a new manager), a bit of
a joke. Every day there is further speculation on who our next manager will be.
A recent report says that we are still interested in Ajax manager Erik ten Hag,
despite the fact he recently signed a new contract for the Dutch giants. "Four
candles" is a better joke, and at least it brings a smile to peoples faces.
The Athletic magazine claim that we
have a shortlist of four managers; ten Hag, failure Roberto Martinez, inexperienced
Graham Potter and Ralf Harris… sorry, Rangnick, with all four said to be still in contention.
Then there is good old Pochettino… we mustn't forget our ex (yes, I know he
would be number five… but I added him because of the recent paper speculation; however,
it didn't mention his name in this particular article I quoted about the Four Musketeers).
It wasn't that long ago – as the crow flies
- that ten (or was that nine?) Hag penned a one-year contract extension with
the Eredivisie outfit until 2023. But… yes, there is always a "but,"
it is said that he would still be within our reach (yes, Levy has long arms)
should we wish to advance as he is still popular among our club members. Even
though, according to the Guardian newspaper, he is still happy at Ajax, where
he has won everything domestically and enjoys a good rapport with the club's director
of football, Marc Overmars. A bit of a contradiction there! So, why does the
speculation continue? Or is this just a ploy to up his wages if he should get
to go to Tottenham? It is like a game of Monopoly where Levy is concerned.
I went to the last home game, and in
the home programme, Daniel Levy admitted in a letter to us, supporters, that he
wants to appoint a new head coach who will return to the club's traditions of
playing a free-flowing style of football while also looking to promote from the
club's academy set-up. And he missed out on the word "cheap". And did
you notice that there was no mention of trophies? As the old saying goes, "don't
promise something you are not prepared to deliver".
So, there you have the uptake on who
could next tickle our fancy through all those beautiful papers vying for our eyes.
I noticed that Brendan Rogers has
dropped out of the media frenzy, as one of our possible choices.
What do you think?
All the best, Glenn
COYS!
