Match Preview Wycombe
v Spurs FA Cup 4th Rd. 7.45 pm.
Adams Park, Wycombe
With Liverpool losing last night, seven points behind league leaders United
(with a game in hand), we are still in with a shout in the league. Hence, we
should be confident going into this 4th round cp tie with Wycombe Wanderers.
There are no easy matches anymore – just ask Liverpool! – so when we go into
this game, we will show them respect. But saying that, we have the quality to
make this game all one-way.
Wycombe Wanderers
host us on Monday night.
Wycombe are bottom of the Championship having picked up just 15 points
in 23 matches since their promotion last season. Both teams have met only once
before, and that was in the FA Cup fourth round in 2017. Then Wycombe led 2-0
at half-time and 3-2 with a minute to go, then up popped Alli and Son to rescue
our arses from the fire, and gave us a dramatic win (3-4).
We beat Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Sunday to record our fifth
win in a seven-match unbeaten run, while Wycombe haven't played since beating
Preston North End 4-1 in the third round a fortnight ago.
Wycombe vs
Tottenham
Wycombe have found that stepping up to the Championship hard going this
season. The Wanderers lost their first seven league matches. Our current form
and the fact Wycombe will not have played for 16 days by Monday nights makes
the game a foregone conclusion, at least in theory.
We have already reached the League Cup final this season, and I can see
us continuing in our quest for more than one trophy. Jose Mourinho has fielded
strong sides in cup ties throughout the season, as we hope to end our13-year
wait for a trophy. He is likely to do the same for our trip to Adams Park, but
even if he does rotate his line-up considerably, we have more than enough
strength in depth. Add to that, we have the second-best defensive record in the
Premier League this season, while Wycombe have scored just 16 goals in 23
Championship games.
My thoughts
The depth in our squad can be demonstrated by the players who did not
feature in Sheffield United's victory on Sunday. Players such as Toby
Alderwiereld, Erik Lamela, Moussa Sissoko and Gareth Bale. All unused
substitutes and, of course, Dele Alli, who was not even part of the squad. As
for Carlos Vinicius and Lucas Moura, well, they made cameo appearances from the
bench. However, I expect them to feature
for longer against Wycombe. As for Harry
Kane and Son, I expect them to be on the bench. With plenty
of attacking options at our disposal, we will be expecting to grab many goals
in this tie.
My prediction; over
4-0, probably 6-0 or more.
My predicted
line-up (4-2-3-1): Hart;
Doherty, Rodon, Alderweireld, Davies; Winks, Sissoko; Son, Bale, Moura;
Vinicius.
Tottenham Hotspur
team news
Lo Celso is out with a hamstring injury. Steven Bergwijn is likely to
remain in the squad after recovering from illness to return in the victory over
Sheffield United. Perhaps the biggest question is whether Mourinho's expected
rotation will give Alli a rare start. With all the speculation of him going to PSG,
either on loan or to be sold, might mean he could sit it out.
Match stats
This is just
the second competitive meeting between Wycombe and us, where we won 4-3 in an
FA Cup fourth-round match in 2016-17.
We progressed
from 20 of our last 21 FA Cup ties against sides from a lower division, losing
the other against Leeds at this stage in 2012-13.
Wycombe have
lost seven of their eight FA Cup ties against top-flight opponents, winning 2-1
at Leicester in 2000-01 en route to the semi-final.
Jose
Mourinho last faced Wycombe in the semi-final of the 2006-07 League Cup with
Chelsea, drawing 1-1 away before winning 4-0 at home en route to winning the
trophy.
Lucas Moura
has been involved in nine goals in 11 FA Cup starts (4 goals, 5 assists), more
than any other Spurs player since his debut in the competition in February
2018.
