Tottenham are going for gold by appointing Trevor Birch as their new director of football operations.
Birch commented: "I am leaving Swansea with an extremely heavy
heart. I arrived at the club at a very difficult time, but I hope I have
provided professionalism, stability and a solid foundation internally"
In reality, there was no "extremely heavy heart" but the pay
and a higher status that helped his decision.
From a Swan to a Cockerel in one clear-swift swoop, Trevor Birch has
gone from a humble Chairman at a lowly club to sit up with the Gods. He had
joined the Welsh side in April 2019.
Because of his capture, Levy created a new football board, which will
be led by… guess who, yes, the Millionaire Levy himself. No slacking under his
watch.
The board will comprise itself of Rebecca Caplehorn. She will take on
the newly created role of director of football administration and governance,
while Steve Hitchen has been promoted to technical performance director.
Mr Birch said, "I arrived at the club at a very difficult time,
but I hope I have provided professionalism, stability and a solid foundation
internally which will stand the club in good stead going forwards. Steve
Cooper, his staff and the players have given us all some great moments this
season which will live long in the memory. I also can't thank the supporters
enough for the kindness and support they have shown me over the last 17 months,
and I wish the Jack Army and the club every success going forward. The
supporters deserve it. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the
senior management team and every one of the club's staff who have supported me
during my time here."
He was a professional footballer who began his career playing for
Chester and Shrewsbury. He had previously been chief executive of Chelsea,
Everton, Leeds, Sheffield United and Derby before moving to South Wales. So, a
man with itchy feet. Granted, all those clubs he has been at were lowly-minus
clubs and probably wanted a top club with top ambitions… and now he is here.
He is 62 years old.
So, will things change on the pitch and stadium wise? Only time will
tell.
