What boring and depressing times… no Tottenham.
First, they cancel football
until 4th April, but that wasn't enough, so they change that date to 30th
April. And to be honest, I can't see that date being kept either. But it has
probably done us a significant favour. With four leading players out, by my
reckoning, we would have sunk even further down the table if the season had
continued. Now we have a new lease of life.
Our problems started to
decline last season. A run-up to the end of that season saw us deteriorate and
lose matches. Fortunately for us, we had won enough to get us into the top
four. We were blessed to get to the final (as the other top European clubs fell
by the roadside). Damaging selection and poor judgement did us in though. Sadly,
Pochettino continued where we left off the following season (that is this
season); thus Levy was forced to sack him. Mourinho started well, but then he
was unfortunate to be hit with injuries. Over time he lost four of his leading
players. A few questionable purchases didn't help matters either.
I don't blame Mourinho for
our current decline, even though some do; however, he needs another season with
a new set of players to be tested; then we can evaluate the situation.
As for me personally (where the virus is concerned); I miss
the friends I've met at home and away matches, plus going to different areas,
seeing different grounds and countries. Tottenham has become more than just going to watch Spurs play. It has become a lifetime experience, it has become part of me.
Now I've been told (by the
Government) that I can't go to the gym or restaurants anymore, or at least for
a while. Is it overkill? How will all that affect the morale of the country? I
suppose only time will tell.
Back to football; according
to the experts, this might not be over until June/ August. By then the season
surely can't be completed. If not, then the arguments start; what about
Liverpool and the title? What about relegation or the top four? Personally, if
that happened, then they should think about scrubbing the rest of season from
the record books and use the previous seasons league placings for next season (2020/21).
Of course, that is on purely selfish reasons. At least we would be in Europe
next year. Then everybody ends up suing the Premier league because they will
lose out. And what about those seeking promotion to the Premier League? They will
lose millions in revenue. What a nightmare scenario.
On top of all that the clubs
are going to lose millions in sales, and no doubt the season ticket holders and
Premium members will want a refund, which could force some clubs into
bankruptcy. Then there is TV revenue; they will want their money back if they
can't broadcast football.
There is talk of playing
matches behind closed doors. But what is football about? If it isn't about the
fans, it is nothing. But that might not stop the supporters turning up outside
the stadium, as Juventus fans did when they played behind closed doors. So
extra police will still have to be employed.
Clubs will even have to use their staff, emergency personnel, and what about
the players? It is a contact sport, after all.
I suppose Daniel Levy could
plough some of that profit the club just made back to the fans. Not give
himself the three million he usually does. But then again, maybe not.
OK, we'll have to take every
step as it comes. When this is all over, hundreds of companies will go to the
wall; thousands will be laid off. The longer this goes on, the deeper the
uncertainties will rip into the fabric of society and do permanent damage. What
is left at the other end is anybody's guess. Just writing this, I am feeling
the depression right now flow over me. God knows how I or anybody will feel in
a couple of weeks time?
But stay calm.
I don't know if you remember
Groucho Marx? No… he wasn't Karl Marx's brother, however, I presume they both
had the same sense of humour. Groucho was a comedian in the 20th
Century, along with his brothers (Harpo and Chico), Karl Marx wrote the
Communist Manifesto, he was a comedian in the 19th Century.
Groucho Marx said one of my
favourite quotes; "I never would join a club that had somebody like me in
it."
So I'll end on one of his other
quotes, which I think is appropriate, under the circumstances.
"I, not events, have
the power to make me happy or unhappy today. I can choose which it shall be.
Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn't arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and
I'm going to be happy in it." Groucho Marx.
Look after yourself and try
to stay secure and calm. Remember, there are people in worse situations than we
are in!
