With United and Chelsea tripping over
themselves, we needed to win games like this. So, we’ve drawn against City
& Arsenal and lost to Newcastle United and Leicester City. It’s not looking
good at this precise moment in time!
I
spent Friday/ Saturday in London and went to the game from there. The trip was
about 2 hrs & 20 minutes. The trouble with travelling to away games
nowadays is the road works. They are diabolical. Once at the ground, I observed
many ticket touts selling tickets, nothing unusual here.
Leicester
City likes putting on a carnival atmosphere before their games (that is outside
the stadium). So plenty to take your mind of Brendon Rogers being the manager
(that is for the Foxes fans). Once in we expected to inflict more pain on them.
I spent a lot of time talking to our
supporters outside, then once in the stadium, I chatted with many friends, and
then made my way to my seat and prepared myself for the match. The talk around
me was over our European trip and the Leicester game. My predictions again, as
always, was in the positive (2-1). If you can’t be optimistic and positive then
what is the point? As I said, with Chelsea and United tripping over themselves
we needed to make the most of their blunders, instead others are making the
most of our mistakes, while all this is going on Liverpool and City are
stretching their lead even further.
Apart
from the obvious (two), Leicester City and Arsenal are occupying two of the top
four spots, where we should have been making our base. We are seventh. Another
slip up could see us plummetting down into the abyss. We are only three points
from 4th from the bottom.
James
Maddison's first league goal of the season helped Leicester come from behind to
beat us at their King Power Stadium. Maddison drilled a superb low effort into
the far corner from distance to lift Brendan Rodgers' side back into the top
four of the Premier League at our expense.
Ricardo
Pereira had put the Foxes back on level terms, moments after we had been denied
a second goal when Serge Aurier's low drive was disallowed for a marginal
offside call against Son Heung-min. Harry Kane's fourth league goal of the
campaign had given us the lead in the first half, he slotted Son's clever flick
beyond Kasper Schmeichel despite being knocked off balance by Foxes defender
Caglar Soyuncu.
Leicester
thought they had opened the scoring themselves when Wilfred Ndidi scored on the
rebound after Paulo Gazzaniga spilled Youri Tielemans' effort, but the goal was
ruled out for offside by the video assistant referee.
That
was that, and we left the stadium with our heads hanging down. The journey home
was no better. And then to add insult to injury (of course, entirely my own making)
I watched our game again on MOTD. It is called sadomasochism. To be fair I was
interested in the views of the panel on the match (yes, still sadomasochism).
Early days, but those early days are fast disappearing and before you know it,
we’ve hit the halfway stage. But let us try to cheer ourselves up and look
beyond our defeat and focus on the next two matches.
Our
next league match is against Southampton this Saturday, to lose that would be
unthinkable. Pochettino needs to sort things out quickly. He’s the one in
charge, he’s the one who decides the selection, and he is the one that picks
the formation. The buck stops with him. But I still have confidence in him. Six
games in doesn’t constitute a crisis. A crisis will be if we are struggling
near the bottom by the time Xmas good cheer comes along, and the turkey has
been truly stuffed.
Before
the Southampton game, we have to travel to Colchester United for a League Cup
encounter. I have no doubt he will put out a young squad for this match.
Whatever team we put out we must win. The League cup isn’t essential in the
grand scheme of things, but it would be silverware that we badly need and
better than no silverware.
