Giovani
Lo Celso was born 9 April 1996. He is an Argentine professional footballer who
plays as a midfielder. He is currently on loan from Real Betis, but we have an
option to buy. He was born in Argentina and is of Italian descent, and holds an
Italian passport. He has also played for the Argentine national side.
He is
a product of Rosario Central and made his league debut on the 19th
July 2015 against Vélez Sarsfield in a 0-0 home draw. A very unassuming start
to his career, but then again we don’t expect miracles at the first attempt,
just ask Gareth Bale. Under a year later he scored his first goal for his club
in a 3-0 win over Colon. He scored his second in a 3-2 defeat Vélez Sarsfield on
10 April 2016 (still under a year from first joining the club).
Things
were going well for him at his first club, so much so that he was spotted by
Paris Saint-Germain, so on the 26th July, he joined the French club.
He was given a five-year deal, which would have ended in 2021. Paris paid his
club £8.5 million for him. He made his debut for the French side on 5 April
2017 in a Coupe de France quarter-final game against US Avranches. Celso
replaced Adrien Rabiot in the 63rd minute of a 4–0 away win. He was on his way
(and not just to us…
eventually!). He also came on and assisted for Dani Alves’
goal in the UEFA Champions League match against Celtic FC to make the scoreline
7–1. He scored his first goal for PSG in a 3–2 Coupe de la Ligue win against
Rennes on 30 January 2018. He was suddenly making a name for himself.
On 8
May 2018, he scored as PSG won 2–0 against Les Herbiers VF to clinch the
2017–18 Coupe de France.
On 31
August 2018, he joined La Liga side Real Betis on a season-long loan with an
option to buy. Betis triggered this option on 16 April 2019, and Lo Celso
joined the club permanently (but as we know in football, nothing is permanent).
During his time at the club, he made 46 appearances in all competitions,
scoring 17 goals. While all this was happening, Tottenham’s scouts had their
eye on him. Before you could even say tickle my old goose, he was whizzed off
to join us at our great club. So, that is short and long of it all.
But
that is not everything… oh, no. Along with purchasing Celso (and Ndombele
earlier on in the transfer window… and let us no forget Jack Clarke) we also
bought a young Fulham player called Ryan Sessegnon. He is only a tiddler
compared to Celso. Sessegnon is a product of Fulham’s youth policy. He joined
them in 2008 and learnt his apprenticeship with that club until Spurs snatched
the youthful child/ man to become one of theirs/ ours. Now he has the
opportunity, along with everybody else at the club to win one of those magical
trophies that have been talked about, but never in our grasp until now(hopefully!).
At the moment he is injured… but soon will show worth!
So,
that is the short and curlies of it. As I said, but then again I’ve been saying
every season, this season is the season we will get silverware… and trust me,
before I die, I will be proven right (trust me, a season will come where we win
that silverware, I just hope it is sooner than later… say, this season!). After
all, I am a product of Tottenham’s Glory, Glory past, and that included every
bit of silverware we could manage to carry.
