One player signs an extended contract for Spurs, while two leave.
Japhet Tanganga signs five-year deal with the club
Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed on their website that
Japhet Tanganga has put pen to paper; he has signed up to a new five-year deal.
Tanganga had put in several inspiring performances before
the lockdown after breaking into the first-team. That game was against
Liverpool in January.
He is a versatile defender and has been employed at
left-back, right-back, as well as in central defence. Jose Mourinho commented
that he has coped splendidly with the demands of the different roles. However,
a back tension fracture prevented him, and he is only 21-year-old, from getting any appearances following the
restart.
He has represented Spurs at every level from Under-16 to
Under-20, has committed himself to the club until 2025.
My thoughts on Japhet signing.
This is brilliant news, I've always thought he was one for
the future, and now that Jan Vertonghen has departed it might give him more
opportunities. Going on the performances that Tanganga has put in this season,
he has undoubtedly shown that he has the essential talent to be fourth-choice
centre-back next season. Hopefully, he will also get minutes in when we play in
the Europa League, where he will
continue developing his game.
Congratulations Japhet Tanganga.
TOTTENHAM have also confirmed the departure of defender Jan
Vertonghen and goalkeeper Michel Vorm.
The two players are leaving the club following the end of their contracts. Jan Vertonghen spent eight
seasons at the club after arriving from Ajax for £8million in 2012. He is now 33 and probably past his sell-by date, that is why Spurs never gave him the extended contract he wanted. He made 315 appearances in all competitions, getting 14 goals. He has also become Belgium's most capped player, writing up 118 international caps.Vorm leaves us after his second spell at the club since
first arriving from Swansea back in 2014. He made 48 appearances in total but
is now a free agent.
The outward pair both signed short-term extensions in June to take them through to the end of the extended Premier League season. They are both now available on free transfers as they await new clubs.
An official statement on Tottenham's website read: "The
Club can confirm the departures of Jan Vertonghen and Michel Vorm following the
conclusion of their contracts."
Harry Kane bid a moving farewell to his team-mates
after their last game together - the 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace on Sunday.
He tweeted: "Wish nothing but the best for @JanVertonghen and
@Vorm_Official with whatever is next for them. Been a pleasure sharing a
dressing room and playing with them both."
Jan Vertonghen confirmed his departure by tweeting: "So
my time at the club comes to an end. A sad day for many reasons. I will miss
the friends I've made here, the staff that make the club run, playing at the
amazing new stadium & of course you fans. Thank you for all the support
over the years. You've been amazing. We had many unbelievable memories, but for
now, it's goodbye."
Goodbye and thank you Jan for all you have done for us.
COYS!
