Preview; Tottenham Hotspur v Everton
Preview; Tottenham Hotspur v Everton
Tottenham vs Everton is on Monday at 8pm, July 6, 2020.
As usual, this match will be behind a gate of steel, and no
supporters of any type will be allowed in unless one is Daniel Levy or close friends.
Mere peasants like myself are excluded.
I should start this review by saying that we must bounce
back from a depressing defeat to Sheffield United against Everton on Monday if we
are to have any hopes of European football next season. Our 3-1 defeat at
Bramall Lane significantly dented our Champions League ambitions. And with Manchester United and Arsenal all
winning over the weekend, we simply have to pull our finger out. Sadly I've
been saying this a lot recently, but nothing changes.
Everton, on the other hand, have shown a remarkable upturn
in form following Carlo Ancelotti's arrival. They are now seriously in the race
for a Europa League spot, and if they beat us, they would move above us.
Team news
Dele Alli is the one fresh injury concern for Jose Mourinho.
He is struggling with a minor hamstring injury and is unlikely to be used. Japhet
Tanganga has been out with a stress fracture in his back, but is due to start
training next week but will not be ready to play any day soon.
I think or hope that Mourinho makes some tactical tweaks, probably
with Toby Alderweireld. If so he will pick up his first game since the restart
following Davinson Sanchez's midweek display.
Giovani Lo Celso appears to be struggling with a minor groin
injury and may be replaced by either Harry Winks or Tanguy Ndombele.
As for Everton; Cenk Tosun and Jean-Philippe Gbamin remain
out for Everton with long-term injuries. It may be too soon for Fabian Delph or
Theo Walcott. On the plus side; Ancelotti will welcome back Djibril Sidibe who
is once again fit after an ankle injury.
My prediction… or should I? The last couple of games – apart
from the West Ham game – I predicted wrongly. But… I shall put my head in my
hands and say we shall win with something like 2-1. I am sure that Jose Mourinho will hope I am
right, as he, along with us supporters, is desperate to get back on track with
a win. When interviewed after the Sheffield United game, he was scathing. If he
had a cat nearby, I am sure he would have kicked it all the way down the High Road…
or if not a cat, maybe one or three of the players. Who would you nominate to
be kicked all the way down the high road because of the Sheffield performance? Answers
on a postcard and you might win yourself a Penguin chocolate bar.
Oh, just one added thing… Everton haven't won a game away at
Tottenham since 2008, hopefully, that will give us added confidence. Nevertheless,
Everton have had two wins on the bounce; Norwich and Leicester City. We have
won 67 of 178 matches between the two teams, without a loss in the last 14
games, a run that stretches back to December 2012. So, is that an omen or fools
gold?
Best regards, Glenn
